Will Enzo Fernandez Still be a Chelsea Player Next Season?

Enzo Fernandez hasn’t quite set the world alight since joining Chelsea on the back of Argentina’s World Cup success. He’s had his moments, his flourishes of brilliance, but he probably falls just short of the world-class bracket. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t become a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.

He’s played his heart out for the club through one of the toughest periods in recent memory, and the numbers back that up. Last season, he registered nine goals and 17 assists in all competitions, the highest assist tally at the club, while this campaign, he has continued in a similar vein with eight goals and three assists in 29 appearances.

Liam Rosenior is now the fourth permanent manager Fernandez has played under since arriving in January 2023, following Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Enzo Maresca, with an interim spell from Frank Lampard in between. Unsettled is putting it mildly.

The revolving door in the dugout has reportedly left Fernandez deeply disillusioned, and it’s worth noting that Rosenior is actually the seventh manager he has worked under at the club in just three years, when you include the various caretaker arrangements.

For a player of his quality and ambition, that kind of instability is corrosive over time, regardless of the wider noise around the club, from transfer speculation to the constant churn of betting offers tied to Chelsea’s performances.

Now Chelsea vice-captain, Fernandez has skippered the side on numerous occasions and is a senior figure both in the dressing room and on the pitch. Which made it all the more striking when he delivered a hammer blow to Blues fans by refusing to commit his future to the club beyond the end of the season.

He said his focus was on finishing the campaign with Chelsea before turning his attention to Argentina’s World Cup defence in North America, adding only that he would see what happens after that.

Real Madrid Are Lurking

The problem for Chelsea is that Real Madrid are circling. Even for a club of Chelsea’s stature, the pull of the Bernabeu is rarely easy to resist. Trent Alexander-Arnold left his boyhood club Liverpool to make the move to the Spanish capital, and Jude Bellingham chose Madrid over a return to English football when weighing up his options after Borussia Dortmund. The pattern is clear: when Real Madrid come calling, players tend to answer.

Reports suggest that a move to Real Madrid would be Fernandez’s dream destination, with sources indicating the Argentine would be open to the idea if the opportunity presented itself. That said, he has been clear that no formal talks have taken place, describing any negotiations as “zero” when pressed directly. His immediate priority remains the World Cup, and he has indicated he won’t consider his long-term future until after the tournament concludes.

Rosenior, for his part, has been characteristically bullish. He said the speculation means nothing to him, that for a world-class player there will always be rumours, and that Fernandez is fully committed to the group and to winning at Chelsea.

A one-on-one conversation between the pair reportedly left Rosenior confident that the vice-captain is happy at the club, though the manager did acknowledge that Fernandez’s public comments may have been lost somewhat in translation.

Chelsea’s Position is Firm, For Now

Contract with Silver and Gold Pen

The complication for any potential suitor is that Fernandez is contracted to Chelsea until 2032. Club leadership has made clear he is not for sale, and reports suggest they have set an asking price in the region of £120 million to deter interest. Given Chelsea paid a then-record £106.8 million to bring him to west London from Benfica, they won’t be letting him go cheaply.

To further strengthen their hand, Chelsea are reportedly preparing a significant contract extension, with figures suggesting the new deal could make Fernandez the highest-paid player in the club’s history. However, talks over fresh terms have stalled so far, which has only kept the speculation simmering. Fabrizio Romano has noted that if no agreement is reached before the summer window opens, Fernandez could find himself entertaining offers from elsewhere.

Player Power Has Never Been Stronger

That said, player power is a force like never before in modern football. Fernandez also recently changed his representation, aligning himself with The Elegant Game agency run by former PSG and Argentina star Javier Pastore. That kind of move rarely happens without intent, and Europe’s elite clubs will have taken note.

Look at Alexander Isak, who pushed his way out of Newcastle United for a move to Liverpool. In that climate, a long contract is no guarantee of anything. Chelsea fans will be hoping the answer is still in SW6 when the new season kicks off, but right now, nothing is certain.
